SELFOVERCOME . This is a band you need to feel to appreciate, and this band makes you feel their music. Whether on stage - where their fiercely melodic and powerful style forces listeners to move - or recorded - where the intricacies of their music really take hold and don't let go, you WILL feel their message, and that message is a simple one; "We want our music to make our fans forget about everything," says John, guitarist and main songwriter for the group. "We want them to get so wrapped up in the energy of our music and our stage show that they forget about their problems and just enjoy the moment." It seems that this is working, as all of their shows are mobbed with an incredibly energetic 18-30 crowd that keeps wanting more - and LEVEL is happy to give it. Jeremy, the band's rock-solid drummer, says, "In our music, there's always something to listen to, whether it's a cool vocal line, a catchy guitar riff or a drum fill, we make sure that nothing is ever boring or old. We don't ever let up. Every one of us ends up exhausted after a show."
This band didn't always have the amazing musical cohesiveness that impresses all who hear them. In years past they struggled like a dysfunctional family, with a singer who admittedly had talent, but whose personality didn't mesh with even one other member of the band. Constant fights and unpredictable performances finally forced the band to end their relationship with him and begin the search for someone to make this band reach their full potential.
42 auditions later they met Alex, and it was love at first sight. Mike, the whiz-kid bass player, still thinks he remembers all of them running in slow motion through a meadow with their arms outstretched, but that may have been a dream. In any event, the new SELFOVERVOME has both the band and its fans more excited than ever before. They've turned that dysfunctional family into the Brady Bunch... with loud f'in guitars. The engineer on their latest release says, "I've never seen such a turnaround with a new member before. Alex jelled in perfectly with the other guys from day one. He came in and recorded new vocals over their old tracks a week or two after joining the band and made me wonder if he hadn't been stalking the band and making up his own lyrics for years. He's a real pro"
Many groups have the misfortune of being good either live or on CD, but these guys impress on both fronts. Their live show and the crowd's response made them a natural for inclusion on Emergenza's international two-disc promo CD, and SELFOVERCOME's own discs are moving as fast as they can print them out.
What's their image? Exactly like those that listen to them. These guys look and act just like the people they're playing to, and that makes it really easy for fans to relate. These guys are down to earth. Alex has said, "When it really comes down to it, we know our chances are slim competition is fierce. That's why we're so thrilled that we get along so well and love this music so damn much. We really want to succeed, but if we don't get lucky enough to get signed, we know we're at least getting our message across in the meantime." Jeremy agrees, saying, "We really dig what we're doing, and we've brought a lot of people something they really dig, too. We've had so many people say to us, 'this is the music that I love why isn't anybody else playing it like this?'"
